Pinta a Manta

We are launching a global contest - Pinta a Manta!
Inspired by traditional Portuguese ceramics, we are celebrating our Azores research expedition by inviting you to design your very own manta ray, for a chance to win a prize on World Manta Day!

 

ABOUT THE CONTEST:

This contest is organised by the Observatório do Mar dos Açores (OMA), based at Fábrica de Baleia de Porto Pim, Monte da Guis, 9900-01 Horta, in partnership with the Manta Trust and Manta Catalog.

  • Participation is free and voluntary

  • Open to two age categories:

    Under 12s

    12s & above


HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

  1. Download the manta ray outline template below.

  2. Design your manta ray any way you wish!

    We urge you to think about what you would like your design to portray - can you use your design to tell a story?

    Use any medium you would like and be as creative as possible!

  3. Submit your entry via email to: jennifer.spacagna@mantatrust.org by 29th August 2025

Make sure to include your full name, age, place of residence, title of artwork, and technique used.

 

SELECTION & NOTIFICATION OF WINNERS

  • Entries will be reviewed by a jury from OMA, Manta Trust, and Manta Catalog

  • The top three artworks in each category will win a prize

  • Winners will be contacted via email

  • A ceremony and exhibition will take place in Santa Maria, Azores on World Manta Day (17th Sept)!

PRIZES

Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each age category.

GENERAL TERMS

  • By participating, contestants grant the organising entities unrestricted rights to use their artwork, name, age, and place of residence for exhibitions and promotional materials.

  • Please note: The first prize of a ceramic manta is only available to residents of Portugal. An alternative ‘Name a Manta Ray’ prize will be awarded to first prize winners if they are located elsewhere.

Design your Manta Ray!

Download the A3 or A4 template and get to work designing your manta ray. Designs can be digital, or you may choose to print the template to work on your design.

You are welcome to use any medium you wish - oil, acrylic, coloured pencil, collage - be as creative as possible!

We encourage you to think about what you would like your design to portray. Can you tell a story through your artwork?
