Southern African Nations Prepare for Sharks and Rays at the CITES CoP17

With just over a week left until the 17th Conference of the Parties, Southern African nations gathered in Cape Town on September 13-15 to review and discuss the proposals to list silky sharks, thresher sharks and mobula rays onto Appendix II of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Approximately forty attendees from South Africa, neighboring countries, international fisheries, and shark research experts discussed the multiple threats facing sharks and rays worldwide, and the need for appropriate management of these species —all of which are suffering declines over 70% worldwide.
